to Linton on Ouse
July 8th/9th
Wings collection in a local supermarket
July 10th
Pontefract's annual Liquorice Festival. We will be raising funds
for Wings on a joint stall with the British Legion, at no cost
to the branch. I would advise anyone who has not yet attended
this Festival that it is really worth a visit. Pontefract is
famous for it's cakes. and this year the main sponsor is one of
the major manufacturers of Pontefract cakes. We usually have
live music, trade stalls, food stalls from Britain and abroad
and fairground amusements all in our market place. All in all a
great family day out. Hope to see you there.
August -- we are
planning a Harvest Festival & Harvest Supper at our club
September 10th
is our Wings Barbecue. Everyone is welcome, but please, if you
do plan to attend let us know in advance so that we can make
sure we order enough to eat and everyone is fed.
September 30th
Is our Golden Jubilee. We will be celebrating it but at the
moment it is still in the planning stage
October
1Tth/15th- Two more days supermarket collecting. A bit later
than we would have liked, but Royal Mail delays held up our
request and the following granting of permission. Even so it's
two more days towards Wings.

Dear John,
Just a quick note to let you
know that myself and the rest of the cadet team completed our Himalayan Trek
successfully reaching the summit of Mount Kanamo (5974m) on Sunday 8th August
and arrived back in the UK earlier this week.
Reaching the peak was the
culmination of an epic journey which featured mountain rail travel, trekking
through very difficult but truly spectacular terrain, wild camping and crossing
nine fast flowing rivers (without bridges!) with Sherpas and pack animals. The
journey was made yet more interesting due to heavy monsoon conditions, a
combination of hot humid temperatures and extreme cold, landslides and even
chest deep snow in the latter stages!
Acclimatisation to the
increasing altitude took time and patience. At each stage of the journey regular
additional acclimatisation walks were carried out to ensure that each team
member was fully prepared for what lay ahead. Base camp and advanced base camps
were set up over several days on the mountain in preparation for the actual
ascent which proved worthwhile. Clearly eighteen months of training here in the
UK certainly paid off as each team member was at the peak of fitness and able to
cope with the challenges.
This incredible journey also
gave us a glimpse of Indian culture from the cities of the plains to the rural
villages of the Himalayas ranging from crowded urban life, monkey temples,
historic Shimla, tiny remote hill stations, tranquil Buddhist monasteries to
wide open spaces, glaciers, towering snow capped mountain ranges to the Taj
Mahal.
It was an exhausting adventure
full of hard work but one which I will never forget!
Thanks once again to everyone at
RAFA for sponsoring me. Over the next few weeks I will prepare a full
presentation and report of my experiences.

Members of the Branch
collected £263.00 recently for Wings Appeal. The collection was made in
the Coppergate Centre. On the same day, the Club held an Open Day, which
in essence was for the local community to come and visit the Branch/Club,
to see what we actually do behind our 'Green Door'. The Club Room was
packed with members and friends, and a few local people did come and
visit, and enjoyed the day with the Members.
